Murders This Year: 59

On March 25, the death of Harold Gidding, a 48-year-old Caucasian man, was ruled a homicide. On Feb. 26 Gidding was at Thumpers Bar in Curtis Bay. He got extremely drunk and began yelling at people. He left the bar but was found later outside; he had been badly beaten. He was taken to Maryland Shock Trauma Center but died as a result of his injuries on March 1 at 12:20 p.m.

Thursday, March 24

5:26 p.m. Everett Owens, a 29-year-old African-American man from Silver Spring, was shot to death in his clothing store, Frontline Design Inc., in the 3300 block of Belair Road near Clifton Park. Owens got into an argument with a man at his store. The man left, saying he would be back. He returned with a gun and shot Owens repeatedly while he was still behind the counter. Another person was shot in the leg but survived. Owens was taken to Johns Hopkins Hospital but died from his injuries.

10:27 p.m. Five hours later in Cherry Hill, Leonard Betts, a 25-year-old African-American man, was walking with his son and his son’s mother. Betts left them and a few minutes later they heard gunshots. When they found him in the 700 block of Cherry Hill Road near Cherry Hill Elementary School he had been shot several times. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

Saturday, March 26

8:55 p.m. Michael Goodwin, a 20-year-old African-American man from East Baltimore’s Johnston Square neighborhood, was found by police in West Baltimore. Goodwin was sitting in the driver’s seat of a car. He had been shot in the head. He was pronounced dead at Shock Trauma half an hour later. Goodwin was the 17th African-American man in his 20s to be killed this year in Baltimore.
