Murders This Week: 3
Murders This Year: 52

This year’s homicide rate has finally fallen behind that of last year: As of March 14, there were 52 murders in the city, compared to 55 at the same time last year.

Monday, March 7

8:04 a.m. Trevon Morton, a 19-year-old African-American man from the Liberty Square neighborhood in Northwest Baltimore, was found in the 1000 block of Billie Holiday Court in East Baltimore. Morton had been shot in the head and was pronounced dead at the scene. This is the 11th homicide in the Eastern police district this year, making the city’s second-smallest district once again its leader in homicides.

9:05 p.m. A little more than 13 hours later, Craig Nicolson, a 25-year-old African-American man from Howard County, was driving in Southwest Baltimore with two friends. When they were in the 1500 block of South Edgewood Street near the city line, another car, containing three passengers, approached them. The people in this car got out and talked to Nicolson and his friends. In the course of the conversation, Nicolson was shot repeatedly. He was taken to St. Agnes Hospital but died a short time later.

Saturday, March 13

7:30 p.m. Police officers were called to the 200 block of South Collins Avenue in Southwest Baltimore’s Irvington neighborhood. When they got there they found Byron Bahar, a 16-year-old African-American boy, lying on the sidewalk. Bahar had been shot in the torso and arms. Police found a second victim, a 15-year-old African-American boy, who they have declined to identify, lying on the front porch of a house in the same block. He had also been shot several times. Bahar was taken to St. Agnes Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:30 p.m. The other victim is in critical but stable condition at Maryland Shock Trauma Center. According to witnesses, the two boys were hanging out in the block when a person came up to them, pulled out a handgun, and began shooting. Bahar is the third African-American boy under the age of 18 murdered this year.
