This week we end the homicide tally for 2004 with 278 murders—seven more than 2003’s total—and begin the tally for 2005. One year ends and the other begins in much the same way: with two African-Americans found dead.
Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2004
12:14 a.m. Baltimore Police officers got a call that there was a shooting in the 3100 block of Ellerslie Avenue in Better Waverly, near the former Memorial Stadium site. When they got there they found Lyndell Honeyblue, a 31-year-old African-American man, lying in the street. He’d been shot in the chest. He was taken to Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he was pronounced dead 25 minutes later. Honeyblue had a previous charge for burglary.
4:07 p.m. Later that day, an unknown man opened fire on Tavon Tate, an 18-year-old African-American man, in the 500 block of North Monroe Street in West Baltimore. Tate was shot repeatedly. He was taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center but died during transportation. Tate was charged with burglary a few days before his death.
Thursday, Dec. 30, 2004
5:30 p.m. A large crowd had gathered in the 3600 block of Lucille Avenue in Park Heights when police arrived. There, lying in the middle of the street, was Vincent Wright, a 25-year-old African-American man. He had been shot several times. Another man, 24-year-old African-American man Landreth Bowser, was found nearby and pronounced dead an hour later at Sinai Hospital. He had also been shot repeatedly. Wright has an arrest record with Baltimore City that included auto-theft and drug charges. Bowser had a pending court case for drug charges when he died.
Sunday, Jan. 2
7:42 a.m. Police officers found a woman lying in the backyard of a home in the 500 block of 43rd Street right off York Road in Pen Lucy. She was wearing only a pair of panties. She was pronounced dead at the scene, but the cause of her death has not been released by police. While canvassing the area officers saw that the back door to the house was open. Inside they found the body of a man who had been shot in the head. Their names have not been released because their families have yet to be notified.
1:30 p.m. A few hours later, Joshua Watson, a 1-month-old African-American infant, was brought to Sinai Hospital. He had bruises on the back of his arms, legs, and head. He was already stiff and cold. An autopsy later revealed that the baby’s right leg was broken and his skull fractured. His parents, Laurence Watson, a 25-year-old African-American man, and Tanea Bullock, a 20-year-old African-American woman, have been charged with his murder.
