Murders this Week: 3
Murders this Year: 187

Monday, Oct. 26

10:15 p.m. Joshua McKinny, a 24-year-old African-American man, was pronounced brain dead at an area hospital. McKinny was shot two days earlier. Just after 10 p.m. on Oct. 24, police got several 911 calls about a shooting in the 2000 block of North Wolfe Street near Clifton Park. When police arrived, they found McKinny lying on the sidewalk, shot numerous times. He was taken to a hospital and underwent surgery, but was eventually removed from life support.

Thursday, Oct. 29

6:30 a.m. Eric Cromwell, a 20-year-old African-American man, died more than four months after he was shot. On June 11 at 9:34 p.m., Cromwell was riding a small bike in the 3800 block of 9th Street in Brooklyn. A black sedan drove up to Cromwell and someone inside began shooting at him. Cromwell was shot in the chest and fell off the bike. He ran around the corner to Washburn Avenue but collapsed. The black car drove off going the wrong way on 9th Street. Cromwell was taken to an area hospital and underwent surgery, but he died on Oct. 29.

Friday, Oct. 30

1:22 a.m. Dennis Cornish Jr., a 30-year-old African-American man, was discovered lying in the 1500 block of Edmondson Avenue in Harlem Park. Cornish lived in an apartment building on the block. A large amount of blood was found in the first-floor hallway of his apartment building; police believe Cornish was stabbed there. He died at a local hospital at 2:05 a.m.

I wonder if life would've turned out better for Mr. Cornish if he had something resembling a father in his early years. Cornish Sr. spent the majority of his son's youth racking up charges including robbery, assault, tresspassing, destruction of property and assault with a deadly weapon. Eventually Cornish Jr. rang up a rap sheet that even put his old man to shame, compiling 20 criminal cases against him in the past 11 years, including his father's greatest hits plus various drug possession charges.

Cornish Jr. became a victim of a crime decades ago when his father decided he would rather pursue a life of crime than make an attempt to raise a son. When will so many men in this city learn to stop being cowards and own up to the responsibilities of fatherhood? Great things could come from it if it ever happened.

Incidentally, am I the only one who's sick of people making snide remarks about the murder victims listed in this column, then adding that "I work with at-risk youth!" As thought that justifies everything they say....

Dennis Cornish and Eric Cromwell both have pretty significant criminal histories. The world is better off without them.

We as black people need to stop making excuses to go out and rob, steal, murder, and sell drugs. The fact that 82% of all homicide victims have a criminal past and only 1 in 16,000 law abiding citizens are murdered compared to 1 in 2700 who are criminals. The people who are making excuses for these criminals need to look at the fact that if you have strong families and morality even poverty will not stop you from doing something positive with your life. It is not about black and white when blacks are killing each other. We are too evolved to play that oppressed black people song and dance. I'm black and was born and raised in the inner city and attended public school with no father and a mother addicted to drugs . I have a degree a good job and a family and if I bought in to the sorry ass Baltimore mentality I would be dead or in jail.

Yo Tired, you are not required to come here and read opinions in the "Comments" section. Maybe you should stop spending your time belly-aching about people speaking about facts and giving opinions and do something positive yourself.

Well said, D-nice, well-said. The time for excuses--for all of us, black, white, politicians, cops, whoever--is long since past.

Oh and Tired, it doesn't take any time at all. It is public knowledge available via a quick case search online at Maryland Case Search. Takes about 1 minute to get some information which provides context and maybe a little background behind these terrible killings. Context would be something that could serve you well, considering your senseless comment that "Only God can judge so your opinion doesn't matter." Kinda sounds like you just don't give a shit about anything and you're just leaving it in "God's" hands. How lazy. I mean, if my opinion doesn't matter, then neither does yours.

I am white and am probably upper middle class, if not just middle class and live in a decent neighborhood (Hamilton, though it has its problems, nothing like SW Baltimore).

Anyway, I grew up on AFDC, I do agree that the people posting trash about the victims are probably white right-wingers who had the best of everything growing up. Point is that while the poor and criminal elements may mostly be black in the cities, in the rural areas, they are white, so it is NOT a black thing, it is a poverty thing. If the right wingers in this sites grew up in housing projects, went to shitty schools, and were abused, they would understand how fucking hard it is to turn away from what you know.

Other industrailized countries have a safety net for the poor and they do not have the problems with gun violence and murder that the US does. US: about 11,000 poeple die form guns, UK: 40 Japan: 36 Canada: 200

Hell, you don't have to talk about other countries when comparing the unclvilized conduct of Baltimore's poor residents. Just look at the poor areas in the other counties in this state. Like Garrett, Allegany, Somerset Counties. They have very low incomes, very few public services and the schools get far less money per student than Baltimore City and yet they don't have the shooting and high level of violence found here. Why is that? Drugs, sorry there's drug there too. Poverty, sorry Baltimore residents makes more than them. Schools, Baltimore's City ranks 21 out of 24 school districts in money spent per student, yet are the worst in the state. Guns, sorry that doesn't work, there are more guns in the mostly poor white counties than here, but there murder rate is almost 0, yet Baltimore's is 8 times higher then New York City's is.

It easy to ignore the fuck-up life-style and attitudes of this city's degenerates and criminals and just complain that so-called "upper middle-class white people" are noticing. Keep it up and nothing will change, the bodies will continue to fill the streets, the children will continue to identify with their neighborhood gangs more then with their parents, the good people will continue to be victimized and all the unexplained bodies found rotting around crack houses will continue to stink up this city.

Get a fucking clue, morons, and stop being so racist.

D-Nice hit the nail right on the head with his post.........education is the key no matter where you live and its time for many black people to stop playing the blame game and own up to the problems that seem to proliferate the inner city........ignorance is respected more than education and that is very disturbing and downright disgusting.

seems to me that if church leaders and the NAACP cared about blacks they would do everything possible to shame the shitty parents that are allowing 100's of blacks to be murdered by other blacks as opposed to the 4 suspicious police shootings every yr. they cast a blind eye and give lip service to the breakdown of the family but walk the streets in protest over the rare police shooting. why? they know they can make money off it. they don't give a damn about the average poverty stricken family in baltimore as long as they can buy a brand new suit with racial extortion.

I personally think that youths in baltimore's poverty stricken areas need something to do after school and during the summer break. There's really nothing for them to do. So they start out sitting on porches and watch what goes on aroung them(ages 4-8) then they start imitating what goes on around them(9-12) and by 13 there participating in there first crime. That's not speaking for all the kids but thats just about the majority of them. We need our community centers, rec. centers, and PAL centers back. If they had sometype of extracuricular activities to look forward to I don't think we would have so many kids wanting or feelling the need to join a gang. But thats just my opinion. And by the way I am a young black male born and raised in the poverty stricken areas of west baltimore with a crimanal history and I seem to be doing fine living a positive lifestyle, still strugglin but living positive. Its not about where you're from its where you're going. PEACE TO ALL!

Charles, you need to get a fucking clue and you need to stop being racist, which you have a long history of on this forum. And how can I be racist against you? I am white.

Look at Anne Arundel County: Harford County in Havre de Grace, Aberdeen, and Edgewood; Cecil County: Perryvillle: Prince George's County. You don't think that they have high crime?????????? Maybe not the amount of murders, but there is LOTS of drugs, guns, violence. You need to read up and educate yourself instead of being a generalizing right-wing bigoted moron in your typical Limbaugh-O'Reilly cliched style who gets on here and screams all day, every day. And I am sorry, but when it comes to most crime, economic class matters, and your screaming and inflammatory remarks and those of your fellow generalizing bigots on here does not change that reality.

And get another fucking clue, I was talking about NATIONWIDE problems with gun violence, you are twisting my stats comparing Baltimore to other COUNTRIES, those stats do NOT hold water when you distort them. I was comparing US against other countries. They have free health care and the gape between rich and poor is not as wide. The gap between rich and poor is widest in US except for Singapore and Hong Kong.

And Charles, try actually reading posts and teasing out facts, before you respond with your gross generalizations like you do all day every day on here, I have reposted part of it in case it is too inconvenient for you to scroll up. It is people like you who vote AGAINST health care, jobs, and services which would help to make things better.

"If the right wingers in this sites grew up in housing projects, went to shitty schools, and were abused, they would understand how fucking hard it is to turn away from what you know."

i actually agree with you bmorenewb, to a point: the grandstanding Doc Cheatam is a fucking joke and he does care more about his silk suit and getting his face in front of a camera than he does about making the lives of young black men better. Cheatam is pathetic and the NAACP out of touch.

Hey is another clueless citizen who blast others for making emotional charged, racist and overly generalized comments and yet commits the same offense. The best part is that Hey does at the same time, classic!

As a person who was born and raised in one of the poorer sections of this state, has a multicultural family, lived in Asia for seven years before buying a home in the Greater Baltimore area, I see this this town as it really is. Its a pathetic joke that is defended by apologist like Hey who wears blinders to its real problems, because to do see and actually speak of the truth of those problems is politicly incorrect.

And yes, Hey, you are racist. You said everyone "posting trash about the victims are probably white right-wingers". You pointed to a person's race in a negative manner without any facts to support your claim, that sir, is racism.
