Murders This Year: 41

For the first time since Murder Ink debuted July 14, 2004, Baltimore City had a week with no murders. One homicide was added to the rolls last week, but the death occurred in 2005.

At 2:20 a.m. on Nov. 22, 2005, George Edward Davis Jr., a 28-year-old African-American man, died at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. Davis had been badly beaten in the 1800 block of East Eager Street four years earlier, on Sept. 2, 2001. He had been under medical care since the attack. An autopsy was done Nov. 23, but the cause of death was pending until Feb. 22, when the medical examiner’s office ruled that Davis’ death was the result of blunt-force trauma from the 2001 beating. Davis is the second person added to the homicide rolls this year whose death occurred before 2006.

With this week of calm, Baltimore has racked up 41 murders in 2006, compared to 46 as of Feb. 26, 2005. So far this year, there have been six fatal beatings, four fatal stabbings, and 31 fatal shootings—almost half of the shooting victims were shot in the head. Six of the homicide victims were female, 26 were under the age of 30, and all but two were African-American.
