Murders

This Week: 9

This Year: 113

A short respite from the city’s usual violence turned into another surge last week, demonstrating the capricious nature of the city’s homicide trends. Of the nine murders recorded, six happened over just two days. The medical examiner’s office determined that a 2-year-old girl who died in May was murdered. And a man who shot his friend in a video-taped test of a bulletproof vest was charged with first-degree murder.

Tuesday, July 15

4:49 p.m. Jamal Ross, an African-American man who had just turned 32 four days before, was on the 2200 block of Windsor Avenue near the corner of North Bentalou Street when someone shot him several times. He died soon after.

Wednesday, July 16

3:58 a.m. Less than 12 hours after Ross died, Darnell Mitchell, a 28-year-old African-American man, walked into the University of Maryland Medical Center with a gunshot wound to his chest. He was dead 10 minutes later. Police say Mitchell was the guinea pig in a video-taped bulletproof vest test that went wrong. In the basement of a Westport home Mitchell reportedly told the camera that he was ready to take a .22 in the chest. The bullet apparently missed the vest, and Mitchell’s companions drove him to the hospital. Police arrested Mark-Anthony Sandang Ramiro, a 30-year-old Asian-American man, and he was charged with first-degree murder.

5:57 a.m. Two hours after Mitchell died, police working in the Garwyn Oaks neighborhood discovered the body of Mia Henderson, a 26-year-old African-American transgender woman, in an alley often used by prostitutes and their johns behind the 3400 block of Piedmont Avenue. She had suffered “severe trauma,” police said. The circumstances of Henderson’s death were similar to that of “Kandy,” a transgender woman killed on June 3 whose body was found in a field. Henderson, formerly known as Kevin Long, was a sister of Los Angeles Clipper basketball player Reggie Bullock.

10:18 p.m. Shakira Jackson, a 26-year-old African-American woman, was on the 3600 block of Dolfield Avenue near her residence when someone shot her in the head. Police and medics responded. Jackson died in a hospital at 10:42 p.m.

Thursday, July 17

11:09 p.m. Police called to the 5000 block of Queensberry Avenue, in the Pimlico neighborhood, for a man lying in the alley found Willie Womack, a 45-year-old African-American man. He had been shot in the chest. He was pronounced dead soon after.

11:32 p.m. Reggie Delonte White, a 22-year-old African-American man, was on the 3500 block of Windsor Mill Road in the Mount Holly neighborhood when someone shot him multiple times in the head and torso. Police found him soon after. He was pronounced dead at 11:40 p.m.

11:52 p.m. Bryant Keith Paylor Jr., a 26-year-old African-American man, was in the parking lot of an apartment complex on the 5300 block of Goodnow Road in the Frankform neighborhood when someone shot him. Police found him there; medics got him to a hospital but he was pronounced dead at 12:29 a.m.

Sunday, July 20

1:45 p.m. Gregory Nealy, a 51-year-old African-American man, was on the 1300 block of Lafayette Avenue when someone stabbed him multiple times in the chest and arms. He died there and then. Police are looking for witnesses.

Updates:

On May 5, at 7 p.m. A woman flagged down police on the 4300 block of Connecticut Avenue and asked for help with her 2-year-old daughter, London Clayborne, who she was taking to a hospital. The girl died at 7:35 p.m. The woman said the infant had hurt herself on a playground. On July 17 a medical examiner ruled the death a homicide by blunt-force trauma, and London Clayborne became the third infant murdered in Baltimore in 2014.
