Murder Ink: 9 murders this week, 336 murders this year

There were nine murders in Baltimore last week—four stabbings, three shootings, a beating, and one in which police described the victim as having "obvious signs of trauma."

Tuesday, Nov. 24

12 a.m. Ananias Jolley, the 17-year-old African-American student who was stabbed by a classmate on Nov. 24 at the Renaissance Academy in the Upton/Druid Heights neighborhood, died on Dec. 20 while in the hospital. The suspect, Donte Crawford, who is also 17, was already in custody on an attempted-murder charge. He is being tried as an adult.

Tuesday, Dec. 15

7:50 p.m. Michael Pirela, a 48-year-old African-American man, was on the 300 block of South Dallas Street when he was stabbed in the chest. Police responded and got him to an area hospital, where he later died from his injuries. Police say he was "involved in a verbal altercation with an unidentified male" before he was stabbed.

Wednesday, Dec. 16

9:52 a.m. William Epps, a 30-year-old African-American man, was shot multiple times in a home on the 2100 block of North Barclay Street. Officers took him to Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he later died from his injuries. Epps had resided on the 3000 block of Chesterfield Avenue.

12:40 p.m. 1-year-old Brandon Washington, of the 700 block of East 23rd Street, suffered a fractured skull and bodily bruising "which indicated the child sustained his injuries by means other than from a fall," according to a police spokesperson. Medical examiners ruled his death a homicide at Johns Hopkins Hospital, and police arrested the child's stepfather, 23-year-old Timothy Dunbar, and charged him with second-degree murder.

Thursday, Dec. 17

5:36 p.m. Baltimore City homicide detectives joined Baltimore County detectives to investigate a house on the 3600 block of Pulaski Highway, where they'd found 48-year-old Gina Kirchner, a white woman, who had "obvious signs of trauma." Medics pronounced her dead. County police arrested Terrence L. Jenkins and charged him with murder; he was also charged on Monday, Dec. 14 for murdering his girlfriend, 47-year-old Shelly Fillion, in Essex. He is being held without bail in the Baltimore County Detention Center. Police aren't sure what Jenkins' relationship to Kirchner was.

Friday, Dec. 18

6:41 p.m. Leroy Sweets, a 41-year-old African-American man, was shot on the 2400 block of West Fayette Street. Medics took him to Shock Trauma, where he died soon after.

Sunday, Dec. 20

1:50 a.m. Two men were stabbed on the 300 block of North Calvert Street. Brandon Holland, a 28-year-old African-American man, was stabbed multiple times in the torso, and walked into an area hospital. Shortly after, 19-year-old Antwan Turner walked into the same hospital with similar wounds. Both men died.

11:05 a.m. Police responded to the back of the 1100 block of North Carrollton Avenue in Sandtown-Winchester for a "suspicious death." There, they found 30-year-old Timothy Anderson, who had been shot in the head, lying in the back yard of a vacant house. Police think that he might have been lying there for a few days before anyone found him.
