Murder Ink 9/28/16: 8 murders this week; 231 murders this year

Eight more murders; 90 since July 1. Plus a mass shooting with no fatalities. Another week in Baltimore

The pace of murders continues to increase in Baltimore, which has exceeded the one-murder-per-day threshold for three months running. A mass shooting this weekend at Greenmount Avenue and E. Preston Street claimed no fatalities among the eight shot.

Monday, September 19

10:30 p.m. Marcus Edwards, a 21-year-old African-American man from Washington, D.C., who was a student at Morgan State University, was crossing the street on the 5400 block of Loch Raven Boulevard when someone stabbed him in the chest. He died. His mother and aunt told the Sun that Edwards wanted to become a police officer. Police as yet have no motive or suspects in his killing.

Tuesday, September 20

Medical Examiners ruled the death of Eric Wilkins, a 43-year-old African-American man, a murder. Wilkins went missing in late August. Police found him on the floor of his home on the 3100 block of Reisterstown Road on September 14 at 1:40 p.m. He had been bludgeoned to death.

Wednesday, September 21

2:37 a.m. Michael Bates, a 46-year-old African-American man who worked as a chef, was near his home on the 4600 block of Pen Lucy Road when, according to police, three men walked up to rob him with guns. Bates put his hands up, but one of the robbers shot him in the neck, and Bates died soon after at a hospital.

9:05 p.m. Two men on the 2300 block of Reisterstown Road were stabbed, and Davon Bridgeford, a 30-year-old African-American man, died from stab wounds to his torso. Police found him on the corner of Gwynns Falls and Woodbrook Avenue and summoned an ambulance, which took him to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. The other man, age 31, was stabbed in the neck and initially told responding police that he had fallen. The police had been called for a "sick case." The surviving victim, according to police, "did not give a name as to who stabbed him."

Friday, September 23

3:10 a.m. Danny Barnes Jr., a 30-year-old African-American man, was walking out of his home on the 1800 block of N. Calvert Street to get something from his vehicle on Trenton Street when someone shot him in the leg and stomach. He died soon after at a hospital.

Saturday, September 24

1:08 p.m. Levon Stokes, a 25-year-old African-American man, was on the first block of S. Cary Street when someone shot him. Medics got him to Shock Trauma where he died. Stokes resided on the first block of N. Fulton Street.

Sunday, September 25

2:03 a.m. Lamell Stukes, a 26-year-old African-American man, was on the 100 block of N. Smallwood Street when someone shot him. When police got there, Stukes was gone, and he walked into Bon Secours hospital shortly thereafter, and died. Stukes had resided on the 2100 block of W. Saratoga Street. On September 26 police arrested Anthony Montgomery, age 27, at a grocery store on the 2100 block of W. Lexington Street, and charged him with first degree murder in Stukes' death.

5:44 p.m. A man who police say they have not yet identified was shot in the rear alley of the 4300 block of Park Heights Avenue. Police found him there bleeding from the chest, and medics got him to a hospital where he died.

Updates:

The woman killed September 8 in the woods behind Dolfield Avenue has been identified as Ranarda Williams, a 35-year-old African-American. The man killed on September 18 on the 1800 block of N. Montford has been identified as Robert Crowe, a 44-year-old Caucasian who had resided on the 7500 block of Lange Street.
