Murder Ink 5/24/17: 8 murders this week; 135 murders this year

From Friday through dawn on Monday on Preakness Weekend, three people were murdered in Baltimore, six others shot non-fatally, and four people were arrested with handguns. By the weekend's end, Baltimore had tallied 36 homicides more than last year on this date. On May 22, a group calling itself Baltimore Ceasefire sent out a press release calling for a 72-hour ceasefire beginning Friday, Aug. 4, saying Baltimore can have a murder-free weekend if everyone takes personal responsibility.

Monday, May 15

10:42 p.m. Brandon Lucas, a 26-year-old African-American man, was on the 3000 block of Spaulding Avenue when someone shot him in the torso. Medics got him to a hospital, where he died. Lucas lived on the 600 block of Bonner Road.

Tuesday, May 16

9:30 a.m. Less than 12 hours after Lucas died, Tyrelle Williams, a 26-year-old African-American man, was found by police in the rear of the 2600 block of Greenmount. He had been shot, and he was dead. Williams had resided on the 300 block of Whitridge Avenue, according to police.

Wednesday, May 17

9 p.m. On Jan. 12, Kathy Schultz, a 58-year-old Caucasian woman, was at the intersection of Eastern Avenue and Eaton Street when she got into an argument with a man. According to police, Schultz was highly intoxicated and witnesses reported that she took a swing at the man, who pushed her, causing her to fall and hit her head. Schultz was taken to a hospital where her condition deteriorated. She was soon on a ventilator, suffering from a cracked skull. She died in March. On May 17 the medical examiners office determined Schultz's death was a homicide. Police said an arrest warrant was pending at press time for the suspect, who is in jail on an unrelated charge.

10 p.m. Damontez Hudgin, a 20-year-old African-American man, was on the 5300 block of Merceron Avenue in the Howard Park neighborhood when someone shot him. Police say witnesses heard three or four gunshots and a car speeding away. Hudgin was found wearing a black ski mask over his face and latex gloves on both hands, according to police. He had lived on the 900 block of Dantrey Court.

Thursday, May 18

4:50 a.m. Thomas Wyhett, a 48-year-old African-American man, was on the 500 block of Sheridan Avenue in the Woodbourne-McCabe neighborhood when someone shot him to death. Wyhett, who was also known as Wyatt, lived on the unit block of North Kossuth Avenue.

Friday, May 19

11:03 p.m. Brian Deshields, a 47-year-old African-American man, was on the 1800 block of St. Paul Street in the Charles North neighborhood when someone stabbed him. Police received a call for a man laying on the ground and found him there; medics took him to Shock Trauma, where he died. Deshields had resided on the 3500 block of Liberty Heights Avenue.

Sunday, May 21

2:26 p.m. Dorian Lumpkins, a 20-year-old African-American man, was on the 300 block of Collins Avenue in Irvington when someone shot him more than once. He died soon after, at Shock Trauma. Lumpkins lived on the 100 block of S. Augusta Avenue.

Monday, May 22

4:20 a.m. A 66-year-old man who police have not yet identified publicly was on the 5100 block of York Road with a friend when two men tried to rob them with a gun. They fought back, and the 66-year-old was shot in the chest. Both suspects ran west on Winston Avenue. The man died a short time later at a hospital.

Updates

Police arrested Eugene Cartwright, a 44-year-old African-American man who lives on the 2500 block of Shirley Avenue, and charged him with first degree murder in connection with the March 29 beating and stabbing death of Claude Maid at the BP gas station on the 5100 block of Reisterstown Road. Cartwright is held without bail.

Police arrested Keith Nicholson, a 29-year-old African-American man, and charged him with the April 24 murder of Mackinley Williams, age 53, on the 1700 block of Washington Street.

Police identified the person murdered on May 11 on the 3900 block of Maine Avenue as a 32-year-old African-American man of the 7100 block of Windsor Mill Road. The African-American man who was killed on May 15 on the 1000 block of Washburn Avenue was Tomez Lee, age 32, of the 3800 block of Brooklyn Avenue.
