Baltimore City Power Rankings: Jana Hunter and Abdu Ali, Larry Hogan, and more

Owing to his chemotherapy, Gov. Larry Hogan appeared in public chrome-domed, cracking jokes and handling his cancer with admirable aplomb. Then he announced the immediate closing of the Baltimore City Detention Center, the medieval carceral hellscape that has blighted Baltimore for a century and a half. The inmates—750 of them—will be moved to other facilities, the governor promises. So too the staff—at least those who are not active gang members. The ACLU—which in June filed to reopen the long-running civil suit against the jail—praised the jail’s imminent demise while the Public Justice Center cautioned that huge problems in living conditions and medical care remain at the city’s other jails. Within the last couple of weeks, The Sun’s staff got the city to release 7,000 emails related to the death of Freddie Gray and its aftermath along with CCTV data from the epicenter of unrest at Penn and North—crucial data that has already filled out the picture of the events considerably—while also breaking important stories about a BPD training shooting last year and a reported “suicide” in police custody. City Paper is owned by the Baltimore Sun Media Group, which also owns The Sun, but regular City Paper readers know that we are anything but easy on the city’s paper of record. In this case, the paper’s staff deserves major accolades for its dogged coverage of the events shaping a critical time for the city, and we’re happy to offer them.
