City Paper

On Friday, activist (and CP contributor) Kwame Rose tweeted “Why is it that @baltimoresun nor @city_paper have a prominent Black writer on staff? Are white journalist the only voices valued.” Some pointed out the Sun does have a number of staffers that are people of color but the same can’t be said of City Paper. Our arts editors and indeed all our full-time staffers are white while our freelance writers—black and white—work for a pittance and don’t get health insurance. CP Managing Editor Brandon Soderberg acknowledged this on The Marc Steiner Show last Monday and we've addressed it numerous other times but those kinds of concessions are not enough. Following the uprising, as the paper becomes more focused on issues of race in the city, an all-white paper using black voices only as freelancers threatens to undermine CP's advocacy.
