Four shot in Hillen neighborhood of Northeast Baltimore

One man was killed and two were critically injured in a quadruple shooting Saturday afternoon on a residential street in Northeast Baltimore, police said.

The shooting was reported about 3:45 p.m., and officers found the victims in the 4300 block of Welbourne Road in the Hillen neighborhood across Hillen Road from the campus of Morgan State University.

One victim was pronounced dead at the scene, and the others were taken to area hospitals. The fourth victim was in stable condition. On Sunday, police identified the victim who died as Dwayne Reid, 40, of the 5500 block of The Alameda.

Col. Darryl DeSousa, the chief of patrol for the Baltimore Police Department, said police, who were aware of no motive and had no suspect descriptions, were asking the public for help. “We’re trying to put pieces to the puzzle,” DeSousa said.

Police and medics left the body of the fatal victim at the scene, initially covered with a sheet. Eventually, they put up barriers to block it from view. The street was dotted with yellow evidence markers.

Neighbors said they heard as many as nine gunshots, and frantic relatives of at least one of the victims streamed to the crime scene to find out what had happened. One woman could be heard saying, to no one in particular, “Pick him up off the ground.”

Just beyond the crime scene tape, a boy took a few sled rides down his snowy front yard.

Residents said the victims hung out in the area, but police Maj. Richard Worley, the Northeastern District commander, said the fatal shooting victim was not from the neighborhood.

Of the 36 homicides in Baltimore this year, the Northeastern District has accounted for at least 10 of the killings — more than any other of the department’s nine districts.

The Hillen neighborhood hasn’t been known for problems with gun violence in recent years. The homicide was the first since 2012, while the only non-fatal shooting since then occurred in August 2014.

The nearby Northwood Plaza Shopping Center, where former City Councilman Kenneth Harris was fatally shot in 2008, is the site of a new $72 million business school at Morgan State University.

Saturday’s shooting occurred about a block from Morgan’s campus, but students say they were not notified by the university. School security officials could not be reached for comment.

Anyone with information about the shooting was asked to call 410-396-2100.
