Ten years ago today, Mark Zuckerberg launched TheFacebook.com from his Harvard dorm room.
The social network has grown into the most popular and most used social networking website. It is also a business worth more than corporate giants General Motors and Ford Motor Company, combined.
Started as a site for college students to stay in touch with friends, it came into a market that had been dominated with sites like Friendster and MySpace, which was less than a year old at the time of Facebook’s launch.
Facebook now has an estimated 900 million unique visits per month, far ahead of Twitter, its biggest competitor, which has an estimated 310 million unique visitors per month.
For many people, Facebook has become a part of their daily routine, making it hard to think of a time before the site existed, or before it was open to everyone — including businesses — and not just students at a select number of colleges across the country.
