A wide variety of these delicious stone fruits are available in our local market, and each will offer a different taste and texture. Yet all varieties will be sure to make you smile while their juice dribbles down your chin. 

While plums are delicious as a snack, baked in desserts, or made into delicious sauces and spreads, they are equally delicious as an ingredient in cocktails. Their sweet and tart tang offers a unique flavor profile that is hearty enough to stand up to herbs and other strong flavors like honey, ginger or citrus. The flavor of plums pairs beautifully with a variety of spirits, especially gin, bourbon and vodka.

The plums used in this recipe were a mix of Methley, which are small and red, and a larger yellow variety, called Shiro. Any variety will do. Be sure to use plums at their peak–or just past their peak–of ripeness. You’ll know they are ready because their skin is nearly transparent and they will be soft to the touch. 

Plum Plucker Cocktail

INGREDIENTS:

Plum Simple Syrup:

2 cups water

1 cup sugar

6 plums, quartered

Cocktail (makes one):

Ice

Plum

Large lemon wedge

1 ounce plum simple syrup

½ ounce elderflower liqueur

2 ounces gin

2-4 ounces bubbly water

DIRECTIONS:

Plum Simple Syrup:

Mix quartered plums, sugar, and water in a medium sauce pot. Bring to a boil.

Once boiling, lower heat to simmer. Simmer for 10 minutes to thicken.

Remove from heat and let the syrup cool. 

Strain into a container, cover, and chill. 

Cocktail: 

Add lemon, plum, and simple syrup to a martini shaker and muddle. Don’t have a muddler? Use the handle of a wooden spoon.

Add gin, elderflower liqueur, and ice. Shake vigorously and pour entire contents into a Collins glass, with additional ice as needed.

Top with sparkling water and give a quick stir.
