Sam's Kid (811 S. Broadway) boasts an intriguing pan-Asian menu in a brightly lit Fells Point storefront. Tapas Adela (814 S. Broadway, [410] 534-6262), part of the Kali's Restaurant Group, brings Spanish tapas to the former Southern Accents space by the Admiral Fell Inn. Look for "'Americana' fare influenced by immigrating cultures and sustainable philosophies"—or so says the web site—at Mr. Rain's Fun House (800 Key Highway, [443] 524-7379) in the American Visionary Arts Museum. Despite the economic downturn that has taken the life of several local restaurants (RIP Bicycle and Brass Elephant), brave souls continue to join Baltimore's culinary landscape. Milan, which promises "eclectic Italian/Mediterranean cuisine," is set to open in the coming months. Located at the corner of Eastern Avenue and Exeter Street, it has the benefit of being adjacent to both Little Italy and Harbor East. We're a bit nervous about the "Italian-inspired sushi" it plans to offer, though. Don't ... [MORE]
Saturday's forecast calls for sunny skies, just in time for Let's Eat Charles Street, a Mount Vernon street festival sponsored by the Historic Charles Street Association. We love this time of year: the leaves are spectacularly psychedelic, apple cider is at the markets, and traditional ethnic food is being celebrated at various spots around town. Zion Lutheran Church (400 E. Lexington St., [410] 727-3939) hosts its annual German sour beef dinner on Wednesday, Oct. 28 (dinner 4:30-7:30 p.m. in the dining hall; beer hall 4:30-9:30 p.m.) and Thursday, Oct. 29, (lunch 11 a.m.- 2 p.m.; beer hall 4:30-9:30 p.m.). FYI, beer is served only in the beer hall, since the din ... [MORE]
In addition to faves Resurrection and Ozzy, the Brewer's Art (1106. N. Charles St., [410] 547-6925) is offering Cerberus Triple; Saison Pecore; Clamper's Ale, a grisette or Belgian-style farmhouse ale; and this month's batch of Zodiac Pale Ale, an English bitter. Look for a new style of pale ale every month. The seasonal brews at DuClaw (901 S. Bond St., [410] 563-3400) are Consecration, an American brown ale; Mysterium, a Belgian-style spiced ale; and Twisted Kilt, a Scotch ale. Mahaffey's ... [MORE]
Baltimore Beer Week began last night aboard the USS Constellation with the tapping of a special keg of Clipper City Loose Canon by former Oriole and Boog's Barbecue namesake Boog Powell. But fear not if you weren't one of the privileged few invited to the event. Beer Week (actually ten days) runs through Oct. 18, and there's a good chance your favorite watering hole, restaurant, or beer store is sponsoring something special. Check baltimorebeerweek.com for an updated schedule of events, but some ... [MORE]
Less than a week after our Best of Baltimore issue named Black Ankle Vineyards "Best Local Winery", the Maryland Wine Festival celebrated the results of the Governor's Cup Competition, awarding Best of Show top honors to Black Ankle's 2007 Crumbling Rock, a Bordeaux blend (think Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot). (Disclosure: Though I have been a Governor's Cup judge in the past, I was not a member of this year's judging panel.) Although Maryland wineries can win medals for wines m ... [MORE]
Just a reminder, if you haven't already made plans to eat out tomorrow night, re-consider. Thursday, Sept. 17 is Dining Out for Life, a night where more than 50 restaurants around town—from humble to haute cuisine—donate a portion of the night's proceeds to Moveable Feast, an organization that provides meals on wheels to folks battling HIV/AIDS, cancer, and other illnesses. Moveable Feast and its volunteers who make the meals and the meal deliveries do good, good work, and to help th ... [MORE]
OK, last week we talked about the German imports I tried at a recent private tasting, the more traditional Oktoberfest beers. This week it's domestic variations. Of the 17 domestic autumn beers, our top three favorites were Weyerbacher Harvest Ale, Mendocino Brewing Company Oktoberfest Lager, and Lancaster Fest Beer Amber Lager. The Weyerbacher had nice balance, a hint of anise, and a silky finish-not an Oktoberfest lager, but tasty all the same. The Mendocino boasted more malt and a core of spi ... [MORE]
Wilkommen Oktoberfest! It's September, so that means Oktoberfest beers are upon us. Traditionally, these beers are märzens, those coppery, slightly toasty, full-bodied lagers that brewers made in the spring and cellared over the summer (when it was too hot to brew) to be consumed in the fall. Today, brewers, even the German ones, play fast and loose with the "Oktoberfest" moniker, and the season sees all kinds of beer styles including "autumn ales" and an ever-increasing amount of beers m ... Sigh, the restaurant news in this city feels like a never ending stream of obituaries these days. The Baltimore Business Journal announced today that Babalu Grill and Blue Sea Grill in the Power Plant Live area are giving up the ghost. And Jill Rosen over at The Baltimore Sun wrote a piece on recent-ish restaurant closures yesterday that included a list of spots "that couldn't weather the economy" including Brass Elephant, Ixia (though they claimed they had achieved their goals on earth and wer ... In our last post we mentioned that The Baltimore Sun listed Dogwood as closed due to the recession, even though Dogwood's web site said it was just closed for August. Well, Feedbag finally heard back from Dogwood owner Bridget Sampson. The Dogwood is, indeed, planning to reopen Dogwood. However, things are a bit tenuous. Baltimore magazine's post about the just-for-August-closure has garnered some interesting comments from unidentified people claiming to be former Dogwood employees that make the ... [MORE]
After swearing up and down a month ago that it was not, no sirree, no way, closing, the Brass Elephant did just that on Sunday. According to an article in today's Sun by Sam Sessa, co-owner Randy Stahl saw that there were no reservations for the week and decided it would be better to close than prepare food that might never be eaten. A sad end for a storied restaurant. ... [MORE]
OK, so you're going to have to wait until October, but for those who have heard the rumors that Baltimore might host a week of beer activities akin to the one in Philadelphia, the news is now official. Baltimore is on tap to host the area's first Beer Week—actually 10 days—beginning with an opening tap party on the USS Constellation Oct. 8. According to a new web site dedicated to the event, organizer and self-proclaimed local beer maven Joe Gold hopes to schedule up to 150 beer-cent ... [MORE]
Good news for late night clubgoers, the Hollywood Diner (400 E. Saratoga Street) near Sonar is reopening on Aug. 26. And partiers in our oddly late-dining-scarce downtown aren't the only ones who stand to benefit, the diner will be run by a nonprofit that provides job training for at risk youth. The diner was built in Long Island and brought to Baltimore to serve as a set for Barry Levinson's 1982 film The Diner. The city has owned the location since the movie wrapped and leased it to the Chesap ... [MORE]
If you got your hands on a 22 of Clipper City's Big DIPA, the Double IPA that was the first release in their large format, limited edition Mutiny Series, you'll be glad to know that the next release is just around the corner. Look for Prosit!, an Imperial Octberfest lager made with five kinds of malt and three kinds of hops, and at your favorite watering hole or good beer shop. The beer clocks in at 8.5 percent, which is manageable, but call us if you want to share. ... [MORE]
Yesterday, we got a hot tip from, um, our restaurant database that Kolpers, the perennially beleaguered restaurant and bar off Clipper Mill Road, has reopened with new ownership (rather "hon"-friendly, judging by the staff's Hampden accents). So, we took the scenic route home and stopped in a for a few pints. Not bad. The menu is extensive: super-American surf and turf type grub with a long-ish list of bar friendly appetizers. The upper range of the menu is about $27 for some kind of steak, but ... [MORE]
According to a post on Baltimore magazine's In Good Taste blog, Hampden's pasta bar is on the move. Grano, which is one of those love it or hate it places, is moving off the Avenue and into 3547 Chestnut Avenue, the former home of Dangerously Delicious Pies Savory House. According to the blog post, the move is being made in an effort to serve more costumers than the restaurant's current teeny tiny space allows. Havana Road, a Cuban restaurant, plans to take over Grano's spot at 1030 W. 36th St ... [MORE]
Have you tried Cherry Glen Farm goat cheese yet? No? You didn't know about this new, local (OK, Montgomery County) artisan cheesemaker? Well, neither did we, until a recent perusal of the Whole Foods cheese case turned up a package of their fresh chevre. The farm's web site compares it to cream cheese, but it's so much more distinctive-mildly tangy, almost fluffy, and perfect with ripe cherries or a slice of peach. Whole Foods in Mount Washington also carries the Monocacy Silver, which is simila ... [MORE]
Attention downtown denizens: A new restaurant is opening up right in the heart of the city. B&O American Brasserie (2 N. Charles St., 443-692-6172) starts serving breakfast and dinner this Thursday, July 30; lunch service begins Aug. 17. Chef E. Michael Reidt, who was named one of the nation's best new chefs by Food & Wine magazine in 2001, will helm the kitchen. Reidt is moving to Baltimore for the job after garnering attention in Boston, Miami, and Santa Barbara, Calif. B&O will, ... [MORE]
