Burger Love

By Mary Zajac | 1/25/2010

When the Dogwood Restaurant (911 W. 36th St., [410]889-0952) reopened, I looked forward to once again enjoying fine dining within walking distance of my home. What I didn't expect to find was burgers. A green chile, smoked cheddar cheeseburger called the Taos, to be exact—a smoky, juicy mess of a twelve ounce burger made with pasture-grazed beef and just enough deep-green chile burn to keep you warm in winter. There are other burgers on the menu—Galen's burger, named for Dogwood's ch ... [MORE]

Mondays in January are a toxic mix of cold weather and—well, Monday. But Lebanese Taverna (719 S. President St., [410] 244-5533) has a new deal to make this dreaded weekday more bearable: The restaurant has brought back its "Roll Back Mondays" special for the entire month of January. The promotion lists menu items such as hummus and shawarma for their original prices from 1979, when Lebanese Taverna first opened. Popular staples of Lebanese cuisine are all under $10 in a way that makes you ... [MORE]

Milan to Open Jan. 15

By Mary Zajac | 1/7/2010

Are you ready for "sushi Italiano?" Executive Chef Steven Carey and the folks at Milan (1000 Eastern Ave., [443] 438-7503) certainly hope so. Billed on its web site as "an exclusive upscale lounge," Milan hosts its grand opening Jan. 15 and will feature modern Italian cuisine with broader Mediterranean influences. Look for pastas, steaks, and flatbreads as well as the sushi, which features fresh fish with garnishes like lemon oil and pine nuts. Besides three levels of dining and an outdoor pati ... [MORE]

Twitter Cake

By Anna Ditkoff | 1/6/2010

I finally understand the purpose of Twitter. It was created so that Red Emma's could tell me they have "delicious vegan red velvet cake." No sooner did a colleague see the tweet then we were bundled up and headed to the coffee shop to partake. And damn, was it good! Sweet and dense, but airy—and with icing so luscious I considered licking the plastic container it came in. And the giant piece was just $3. The cake was courtesy of Brunie's Bakery, run by goddess of vegan baked goods Tamara G ... [MORE]

DuClaw in Fells Point Closes Today

By Anna Ditkoff | 12/30/2009

Today, Dec. 30, is your last chance to hit DuClaw Brewing Co. in Fells Point. The brew pub is shuttering at end of business today. When I called to ask why, I was answered by an understandably testy employee. "Um, a combination of reasons," she said. I could almost hear the eye roll. "Probably not enough business." I have a call in to the corporate office to get a possibly more diplomatic reason, and to find out how the other locations are faring. In the meantime, if you want a Hellrazer or a Ba ... [MORE]

DuClaw Closure Update

By Anna Ditkoff | 12/30/2009

I just got off the phone with DuClaw Brewing Co. president David Benfield. He says there were two reasons for closing down DuClaw's Charm City location. "One is a small dispute with our landlord over fees on the property," he says. "And during that dispute the landlord offered to buy our lease out." The second is "it's becoming increasingly difficult to run a operation in the city of Baltimore." While most restaurateurs blamed the economy in general, Benfield thinks Baltimore is a particularly h ... [MORE]

Elevation Burger (1006 Aliceanna St.), the all-organic, grass-fed, ethically-minded burger chain has closed its store in Harbor East, The Baltimore Sun's food blog Dining@Large reported Wednesday. Sun restaurant critic Elizabeth Large wrote that the location will re-open Feb. 15 as an as yet unnamed deli and pizza joint. A call to Elevation's corporate headquarters in Arlington, Va. yielded the following statement via e-mail from Elevation partner Michael Berger: Despite the Harbor East Baltimor ... [MORE]

Dogwood Reopens

By Anna Ditkoff | 12/15/2009

Dogwood is reopening Dec. 17 according to an e-mail from the restaurant. Last August, it closed down amid rumors that this temporary hiatus would prove permanent. Rumors that seemed pretty likely when September and then October and then November came and went without the promised reopening. Now, you can once again head down to the basement for Dogwood's brand of local- and sustainable-focused American cuisine.Grano's second location on Chestnut Avenue is already open for business. Miss Irene's Closes

By Mary Zajac | 11/25/2009

Despite a full blown renovation that yielded one of the city's prettiest dining rooms, a killer beer list, and some pretty good food (including a very fine orange crème brulee), Miss Irene's (1738 Thames St.) appears to be closed. A sign on the door announces Poe Boys Oyster Bar opening in December 2009, and phone calls were unanswered (there's no voicemail either). The restaurant opened just under a year ago. Tough times, indeed. ... [MORE]

It's open! A roundup of recent restaurant openings around town

By Mary Zajac | 11/20/2009

Sam's Kid (811 S. Broadway) boasts an intriguing pan-Asian menu in a brightly lit Fells Point storefront. Tapas Adela (814 S. Broadway, [410] 534-6262), part of the Kali's Restaurant Group, brings Spanish tapas to the former Southern Accents space by the Admiral Fell Inn. Look for "'Americana' fare influenced by immigrating cultures and sustainable philosophies"—or so says the web site—at Mr. Rain's Fun House (800 Key Highway, [443] 524-7379) in the American Visionary Arts Museum. New Restaurants

By Anna Ditkoff | 11/6/2009

Despite the economic downturn that has taken the life of several local restaurants (RIP Bicycle and Brass Elephant), brave souls continue to join Baltimore's culinary landscape. Milan, which promises "eclectic Italian/Mediterranean cuisine," is set to open in the coming months. Located at the corner of Eastern Avenue and Exeter Street, it has the benefit of being adjacent to both Little Italy and Harbor East. We're a bit nervous about the "Italian-inspired sushi" it plans to offer, though. Don't ... [MORE]

Ethnic Dinners

By Mary Zajac | 10/26/2009

We love this time of year: the leaves are spectacularly psychedelic, apple cider is at the markets, and traditional ethnic food is being celebrated at various spots around town. Baltimore Beer Week began last night aboard the USS Constellation with the tapping of a special keg of Clipper City Loose Canon by former Oriole and Boog's Barbecue namesake Boog Powell. But fear not if you weren't one of the privileged few invited to the event.
