Naija Fest 2005

This event has already occurred.

The Nigerian Youth Association presents Afrobeat music, food, fashion, games, art, and information.

Besides knowing where to shove all those e-mail scams, don't know much about Nigeria? Then, as a member of the Nigerian Youth Association of Maryland might say, "Educate ya sef!" Nigeria is Africa's most populous nation (about 130 million), is home to some 250 ethnic groups and a wide-ranging terrain (from desert to jungle), was the base for the celebrated Yoruba kingdom of Oyo (circa 15th to 19th centuries), and has a, well, checkered recent political history (its State Department Background Notes make for interesting reading). But most importantly for our purposes, Nigeria is home to the pop/world-music atomic bomb that is Afrobeat. In addition to the funky, strutty, looping music that keeps your feet moving, expect food, fashion, art, games, and even more education at NYA of Maryland's Naija Fest. Don't be a suffer head and miss this one.—Christopher Skokna
