We here at Baltimore's Most So-Not-Calling-Itself-Punk-Anymore Alternative Weekly knew that if trend-hopping suburban teenagers hadn't killed punk, then that whole punk-aerobics nonsense absolutely drove a nail into the coffin. (Not looking at all of you, local young hardcore bands--just saying.) The perhaps good news: Phoenix Dance Company premieres "punk" choreography by Carol Hess during these performances, which also include new works by Doug Hamby and a solo from Sandra Lacy, both UMBC dance faculty members. Hess' work is scored to local hardcore outfit Lilu Dallas and, yeah, it could be some next-level kind of abstracted artiness--but we'll take the idea of somebody doing something and being willing to fail over the store-bought, name-brand instant nostalgia idea of punk any day of the week.—
