50 still lifes, self-portraits, and landscapes by Charles Ritchie.
If many artists flee suburban childhoods and settle in big cities, Maryland artist Charles Ritchie has opted for a suburban address and subject matter in his work. Suburban Journals fills UMBC's Kuhn Library Gallery with work in various media done since 1983. Ritchie's journals include both written observations and the watercolor studies that lead to independent drawings and finally to prints. The 50 works in this exhibit are arranged into separate sections for still lifes, self-portraits, and landscapes; collectively, they add up to an artistic self-portrait of the artist as a suburban man with a house and yard. Although Ritchie may not have to travel far for his subjects, the exhibit itself was organized and sent on tour by the University of Richmond Museums. At the moment, its tour has brought it to the suburban town of Catonsville.—
