Daniel Day-Lewis won his first Best Actor Oscar for his totally committed portrayal of Christy Brown, the Irish writer/painter, whose severe cerebral palsy rendered control of his entire body outside his ken, save his left foot, which became the sole outlet with which he communicated his internal life with the outside world. This 1989 Jim Sheridan movie, based on Brown's autobiography, remains a rare gem--a fascinating story of overcoming adversity that doesn't resort to cheap humanism or cloying, saccharine triumphs, thanks in large parts to Day-Lewis' rigorous performance, which captures Brown's determination but also his volatile anger and frustration, and an emotionally anchoring turn by Brenda Fricker as Brown's mother, who never once pities her son or expects the world to show him mercy. Still compelling.
