Best Book Cart: Jay’s Books

(718) 669-8225, 400 W. Lexington St., lexingtonmarket.com/vendor/jays-books

Posted up in Lexington Market right near Super Deli and Gordon’s Jamaican is Jay’s Books, a cart that offers up a mix of populist favorites (you know: bestsellers past and present, street fiction, etc.), kids books, lots of fiction, and a dependably curated collection of black books, from revolution-of-the-mind texts such as “From Niggas To Gods,” to African-American history books, and hey, even books by Baltimore’s own D. Watkins. Along with some very good deals (usually three books for 20 bucks), Jay’s ships to prisons—a service that as even the big book chains go away and small scrappy spots such as Jay’s just try to skate by, is a crucial service. It is ust one of the many small perks to explore at Lexington Market once you’ve gotten to know the ins and outs of staples such as Faidley’s Seafood.
