Maryland Reporter published some important political reporting by Jeremy Bauer-Wolf yesterday, exploring a debate among Maryland’s Democrats about the role Service Employees International Union (SEIU) has been playing in elections. The union represents healthcare and government workers and gives big in Maryland races, while also providing critical election-day support by marshalling its members to man polling places. Not all Democrats like their tactics though, including Prince George’s County state Del. Doyle Niemann (47th District), a labor-friendly progressive, who calls the SEIU "a bunch of New York labor thugs" who create "lies, false impressions and illusions" with the attitude that "the end justifies the means."
In Baltimore City, SEIU is a key player. Not only was its support critical in Marilyn Mosby's remarkable unseating of incumbent state's attorney Gregg Bernstein, but it was among the top donors to victors' warchests in every legislative-district race, including Antonio Hayes (40th District), state Sen. Lisa Gladden (41st District), state Del. Samuel I. "Sandy" Rosenberg (41st District), state Del. Mary Washington (43rd District), state Del. Keith Haynes (44th District), state Sen. Nathaniel McFadden (45th District), state Del. Cheryl Glenn (45th District), state Del. Luke Clippinger (46th District), and Brooke Lierman (46th District).
