Every year, the long-running weekly WEAA 88.9 FM program Strictly Hip-Hop holds a special all day broadcast, from midnight Friday, June 13 to midnight Saturday, June 14. This year, the 24-hour marathon is especially appropriate because the show is celebrating its 24th anniversary. The theme of this year's broadcast will be "The DJ: Record Producer, Influential Professional and Cultural Trendsetter." As is the case every year, there will surely be lots of Baltimore's best hip-hop DJs in the house to spin and speak about their craft. Strictly Hip-Hop has been broadcasting from the Morgan State University campus every Friday night since 1990, and has long been an essential hub for Baltimore's hip-hop underground. The show is worth listening to every week, but is especially fun during the anniversary broadcast. A few years ago, I was invited to come by the studio and participate, and ended up on the air for an hour with hip-hop pioneer Busy Bee, debating the classic status of various albums. Surely there'll be more lively conversations like that this year. If you're not within the station's broadcasting radius, you can listen online at WEAA.org.
