During a “Blue Lives Matter” rally I was deemed a counter-protester by off-duty policemen and women who weren’t from Baltimore. Lt. Thompson did the same when he looked directly through my lens as if to figure out who I was and why I was taking pictures as I photographed him amidst the shouting. After that, a police supporter used his stomach to block me from moving around in the crowd and said, “You don’t have a permit to be here.” I never forget who I am, especially in these types of situations. In fact, I had similar experiences documenting the Republican National Convention in Cleveland. It’s just always interesting but I’m never surprised.
